A letter to the editor in the journal Psychiatry Research explores just what is wrong with Vader. French researchers posit that Vader exhibits six out of the nine criteria for borderline personality disorder. Unstable moods, interpersonal relationships, and behaviors are all characteristics of this condition, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. It affects 2 percent of adults, mostly young women.

The young Anakin Skywalker was separated from his mother at an early age, and his father was absent, factors that could have contributed to borderline personality disorder. His "infantile illusions of omnipotence" and "dysfunctional experiences of self and others" are also indicative of this condition from an early age.

Personally, I agree with this comment:

Dr. Raison must not be intimately aware with the subplots or intentions of George Lucas regarding his created character of Darth Vader. A significant factor in being consumed by the dark side of the force is the individual's desire to be consumed by it, rather than being unconsciously manipulated. In the case of Vader and his Emperor, Vader is not being controlled by the Emperor; he has instead chosen to follow him as mentor and, in a bizarre perspective, savior. By supporting the Emperor, Vader/Anakin is validating his behavior to himself. His reference to him as "Master" is akin to a student referring to a mentor as "Professor".

And yes, I'm a Star Wars nerd, and you'll be hard pressed to find a bigger Star Wars fan than me.

My favorite Star Wars by far; and for that reason--- he made a choice. He had all he could have wanted or needed and still wanted to be selfish and not feel guilty for it; and, blame any guilt that does make it through, on others. what a pertinent lesson.

4real?

I think the character is more based on archetypal themes then psychological pathology. But if I had to guess I would say he was more narcissistic with attachment issues than borderline PD.
